👋 Hey everyone,
"Many things in life and business are far more about the trajectory than the position. Far more about where you're going, than when you are. We need to be more patient, and let the miracle of time compound."
Tom Goodwin posted this a while ago and it stuck with me.
In brand building, playing the long game is much more about the direction, not the position you hold. Success isn't instant but a result of lasting patience and commitment over time.
Launching a brand? Think of it as planting a seed. Results aren't immediate. Competition is tough, challenges are many. But stay patient and committed, and you set your brand for success.
Patience is the backbone of brand building—creating a brand identity, earning customer loyalty, gaining industry credibility. Consistent messaging, genuine engagement, and adaptability go a long way.
Over the course of my corporate career I observed how brand building tests the patience of even the most seasoned marketing leaders. Market shifts, negative press, changing consumer tastes - all require resilience and adaptability.
Successful brands play the long game, knowing stability lies in patience and perseverance.
Patience also powers compounding, the secret sauce of sustainable growth. Like compound interest grows wealth, consistent branding efforts boost equity, loyalty, and market share. Every positive interaction, experience, and milestone propels the brand forward.
If you take Apple, Nike, Patagonia or any other established brand at that level, you will notice that they continue to thrive on the compounding of their resilience in having positioned the brand in a certain way.
And look, this is not the whole picture, you still need to adapt your mindset and tactics to the current consumer landscape, but it certainly helps to not have to start from scartch every time.
And I totally get it - in the fast world of digital marketing, the temptation for short-term gains is strong. But brands that prioritize patience over haste stand out, building trust and a lasting legacy.
If there was a formula for successful brand building, I’d say it would look like this: direction, powered by patience. In navigating market complexities, enduring trials, and seizing opportunities, patience is the key. It unlocks the transformative power of time, fueling sustainable growth and lasting impact.
So, as marketers we must nurture our brands, prioritize patience, knowing the greatest achievements come from a steady pursuit of excellence over time.
Because we don’t need more brands, we need better brands.
Until next time, stay patient and keep your 👀 on the future.
